Kenai River Rainbow Trout

Alright fellow Kenai river fisherman. If you have been up here this summer then you know just how hot it has been. Sunny days, as all fisherman know, are a mixed bag of emotions. Yes its nice out, and the Kenai river looks beautiful. Yes the photos look incredible and you can see more eagles than one could count in a day. Right, but there is a whole bunch of absolute garbage that happens to the fishing. These incredibly bright sunny days make sockeye fishing even harder. The run has been abysmally slow. The Russian River Sockeye simply have not shown up. According to the fish counter…. as of today only 22,000 have been counted. This time last year it was 60,000.

So all of that to say, if you have salmon FEVAH, go get your fix elsewhere. Ain’t nothing here yet. We all have our fingers crossed for a strong 2nd run.

Kenai River Trout

The big yellow fire ball in the sky has also caused the water temps to jump into the 50’s for the first time this season. The water continues to rise as snow melt in the mountains makes its way to the lakes. I’ll say it publicly now, I’ m fairly concerned about the lack of rain we have received so far this summer. But either way the trout fishing on the Kenai River has been spectacular. We continue to find great fish eating in all the ways that make real fly angling fun. Catching trout this time of year on the upper Kenai, is as close as you and come to traditional western fly fishing. Come August its back to the bead and flesh flies. Thats when they look at you and in their eyes you see, ‘i think this dude is nuts.’ but then it works!

Here are a couple pics from some fun ones the last week or so. Remember if you are looking to plan a day of fishing during your next alaskan adventure, please feel free to reach out at 907-912-0422!

Rainbow Trout on the Kenai River

The weather has been spectacular. This is around 7pm on Kenai Lake. After a great day of fishing some friends and I went and had a fire, hung out, and took a moment to enjoy just how beautiful our office really is!
